54th INTERNATIONALES DIXIELAND FESTIVAL 2026

The world’s largest and oldest music festival for traditional jazz

54th INTERNATIONALES DIXIELAND FESTIVAL

10 to 17 May 2026 in Dresden

The world’s largest traditional jazz festival returns with 33 international ensembles from 10 to 17 May 2026 – around 350,000 visitors expected

The INTERNATIONALES DIXIELAND FESTIVAL Dresden, the world’s largest and oldest traditional jazz festival, invites audiences to its 54th edition on 10–17 May 2026. Over 40 events bring swing to the city: 33 ensembles from 9 countries, unique Riverboat-Shuffle and new exclusive Late Night Boogie at Tresor. Good weather should attract over 350,000 from Germany, Europe and beyond. Under the theme Dresden as the world capital of Dixieland, the Saxon capital again hosts leading international jazz. Sales start 24 October 2025 at 09:00.

World-class music and tradition

Over 250 hours, just under half free, are planned for May 2026. Renowned events include Riverboat-Shuffle, major galas, Wohnzimmerkonzerte at Hoppes Hoftheater, Zoo Dresden’s family celebration and legendary Dixietram.

The line-up demonstrates international breadth. France’s energetic Mama Shakers and charismatic frontwoman return after their outstanding 2024 debut. Swiss boogie-woogie queen Ladyva marks the return to Pianosalon. Baby Jools & The Jazzaholics (United Kingdom), The Busquitos and The OhnO! Jazzband (Netherlands) offer showmanship, wit and musical quality.

New Late Night Boogie at Tresor is an exclusive 100-place concert beneath Löwensaal. Another underground highlight, Hot Jazz in der Festung, uses Festung Dresden’s Kasematten, Kanonenhof and Bärenzwinger.

“Thirty-three worldwide ensembles continue our international tradition, bringing traditional jazz’s leading performers to Dresden in 2026. New formats deliberately reach young, inquisitive audiences,” says Hendrik Meyer.

Festival highlights

Unique Riverboat-Shuffle runs Wednesday, 13 May 2026, on Weiße Flotte Sachsen paddle steamers/saloon ships; weekend visitors have Riverboat-Sonderfahrt Friday, 15 May. Dixieland International gathers leading international bands. Parkhotel’s 1920s Prohibitionsparty offers Charleston, swing and authentic period-bar atmosphere. From 15 May, Open Stage at Jazzmeile offers emerging bands/amateurs opportunities; renewed MDR Sachsen cooperation is being discussed.

“Diversity sustains our festival: established events set standards annually while new high-quality formats make room for young musicians’ enthusiasm and young audiences,” says Meyer.

Protection against terrorism: culture needs safety and planning certainty

SFV remains concerned about costly counter-terrorism requirements, particularly for free Dixieland Parade and Jazzmeile. Most of usually over 350,000 visitors identify with these open events; without them the festival loses its identity.

Chairman Steffen Kiefer stresses: “We offer outstanding music and encounters. For decades our impeccable venue safety plans have meant 53 accident-free years. Counter-terrorism is a responsibility of the state as a whole. Associations and cultural organisers cannot bear immense costs alone indefinitely.”

Unclear funding still pressures the 54th edition. The team seeks uniform nationwide rules for planning certainty. “We continue dialogue, hoping for a timely solution meeting increased security without disproportionately burdening our budget,” says Kiefer.

A festival across generations

Organisers remain optimistic for 2026. Tradition and fresh impulses reflect international swing/boogie revivals bringing young people to dance floors. From small-club Lindy Hop evenings to zoo family concerts, the festival makes jazz accessible to every generation.

Meyer concludes: “This is more than an individual concert event: living cultural history. Dresden has long been Dixieland’s world capital. We celebrate that in 2026 with the greatest musical diversity in festival history.”

Partner support

The festival relies on strong partners: principal sponsor Feldschlößchen AG and long-standing partners including Jazzmeile sponsor WT Energiesysteme GmbH contribute decisively. MDR Sachsen and Sächsische Zeitung, the latter reaching 25 years next year, accompany the full week.

“Such loyalty is not self-evident in difficult economic times; it enables a world-class festival,” concludes Meyer.
