Launch of the 51st Dixieland festival in Dresden

Launch of the 51st INTERNATIONALES DIXIELAND FESTIVAL Dresden

Tradition, innovation and a youthful focus / Advance tickets for May 2023 available now

The INTERNATIONALES DIXIELAND FESTIVAL invites audiences to eight days of compelling jazz from 14 to 21 May 2023. The world’s largest and oldest traditional jazz festival will be especially youthful and dance-oriented, reflecting a fascinating trend.
Swing is enjoying a remarkable worldwide revival. Its varied dance styles are particularly fashionable among young people, practised regularly in many places and on different occasions. This early twentieth-century jazz inspires dancing through its joy, lightness, passion and exuberance. Formerly performed almost exclusively by seasoned older musicians, it is increasingly freshly interpreted by young bands and soloists at an elite standard without abandoning its roots. Spicy Advice Ragtime Band (Sweden), The Sassy Swingers (France) and The Fried Seven (Netherlands) perform at the highest European level.
Exciting young musicians include pianist Dan Popek (born 1996, festival emerging talent award winner in 2019). Almost all members of the 12 international bands and solo acts are also relatively young. The festival will be youthful, exceptionally exciting musically and, genuinely newly, dance-oriented.
Established events at Kulturpalast, the airport, aboard Sächsische Dampfschiffahrt ships and at Feldschlößchen Stammhaus gain Dixie Pub, with two Alter Schlachthof events for dancers. The week opens with Dixieland in Familie at Dresden Zoo, with Sächsische Zeitung as media partner. The first day also features Heide-Dixieland at Hofewiese (Dresdner Heide) and, newly, Lugturm. A further opening event is being planned.
The 51st edition offers 235 hours of world-class traditional jazz, joyfully performed by 37 bands and soloists from 9 countries in 38 events. Altogether, the Saxon capital hosts ten consecutive days of jazz.
